inbreeding

Amount of inbreeding is expressed in %.

The inbreeding is calculated on several generations. Considering the frequent crossings between same parents of the beginning of the breeding, we can see cats nowadays showing a rate of inbreeding.

Value are :
<10% = acceptable inbreeding
10-20% = high inbreeding
>20% = very high inbreeding

We know that the cosanguinity is favorable to the development of genetic diseases, this is also true for Maine Coon (See "Health"). It is thus of primary importance to think well of the mating to make.

 Clones
.
In 1978 Heidi Ho Sonkey Bill was born, a grand son and double great grand son of Andy and Bridget Katt of Heidi Ho. When breeded to Tanstaafl Polly Adeline the amazing thing was that their offspring all looked alike, almost like clones.

When we speak of "clones" we are talking about the sons and daughters of Sonkey and Polly.

The clones were very nice, good typed and sized. They were used over and over, and there was a lot of linebreeding well with important inbreeding.

Nowadays many Maine Coon have a pedigree with 35% clones or more.

Foundation cat
.
A cat of foundation (F1) may live in a farm, in the nature, or in refuge (generally in the United States). No or only one parent of F1 is known and recorded. A breeding of foundation is known as when the stockbreeders introduce cats of foundation into the genetic inheritance of the race of Maine Coon and thus create new lines.

When we talk about lines of foundation, we refer to recent lines which are not yet in usual pedigrees. To introduce a cat of foundation into a breeding makes it possible to widen the genetic pool of the race by bringing new blood, very important process to fight against genetic problems.

- F1 is a first generation of cat of foundation : no or 1 parent is known and recorded
- F2 is a second generation of cat of foundation: the two parents are known and the cat is recorded
- F3 is a third generation of cat of foundation: the two parents and the two gd-parent and recorded
- F4 is a fourth generation of cat of foundation and so on....

A cat of foundation is a cat with lines 100% different from those of a usual pedigree
