*Interpretation of the result for the DNA test for HCM1

N/N homozygote negative = cat carrying 2 normal copies of the gene. Will not develop this form of HCM.
N/HCM heterozygote positive = cat carrying 1 normal and 1 copie of the gene. May develop a mild and/or late form of HCM.
HCM/HCM homozygote positive = cat carrying 2 defective copies of the gene. Present high risk of developing a severe and/or early of HCM.

**Interpretation of the result for the hip dysplasia : results for the Swiss evaluation
(into brackets = results of the X-ray send to the Pawpeds programm)


A (normal) good hips, no anomalies
B (borderline) not quite perfect structure, but not sign of dysplasia
C (1) the mildest form of dysplasia
D (2) moderately affected hips
E (3) badly affected hips

According to Pawpeds recommendations' the cats with the test result "C" are not automatically excluded from breeding but should only be mated to cats with no sign of HD = "A". The cats with the test result "D or E" should be retired from breeding.

Naturally each breeder has the free choice to use or not these recommendations.

**Interpretation of the DNA test for SMA : spinal muscular atrophy

N/N homozygote negative = cat carrying 2 normal copies of the gene. Will not develop the SMA.
N/SMA heterozygote positive = cat carrying 1 normal and 1 defective gene. Will not develop the SMA.
SMA/SMA homozygote positive = cat carrying 2 defective genes. Will develop the SMA.

The important is to marry a healthy cat (N/N) with another healthy cat (N/N) or at least with a cat carrying 1 defective gene (N/SMA). Thus the babies will be either N/N or N/SMA and will never develoop the SMA.
